GSF Foundation at Garner Donates $40,000 on “Childhood Hunger Awareness Day”

On April 4, 2017, the GSF Foundation Garner committee donated $40,000 to Community of Hope Ministries, a community-based organization that serves local hungry kids and families in need. To commemorate the donation and to drive awareness for food insecurity in the community, The Town of Garner has declared April 4, “Childhood Hunger Awareness Day.”

All funds donated by the GSF Foundation Garner committee were raised from its first annual Feeding Hunger: A “No Lunch” Lunch, an event that took place last November at GSF’s Garner facility. The fundraiser was a one-hour soup kitchen-style lunch, where attendees learned firsthand what it’s like to receive a meal at a soup kitchen.

“On behalf of the GSF Foundation and our associates in Garner, we’re proud to donate funds that will help ease hunger for local children in need,” said Anna Lisa Lukes, GSF director of corporate social responsibility and executive director of the GSF Foundation.

“Funds from this grant will provide 85 families who are food insecure and attend a Garner elementary school nutrition assistance twice a month to help relieve the financial stress of providing food for their families,” said Amy White, executive director, Community of Hope Ministries. “Funds from this grant will also provide food for families whose children are home during the summer months when free meals are not available to children because school is not is session. The GSF Foundation’s commitment to making sure no child goes hungry is a tremendous asset to the academic and enrichment programming offered by Community of Hope Ministries.”

In addition to Mayor Ronnie Williams, other supporters in attendance included GSF associates, sponsors of the inaugural Feeding Hunger: A “No Lunch” Lunch event and Community of Hope volunteers. The second annual Feeding Hunger: A “No Lunch” Lunch will take place on November 14, 2017 at Community of Hope Ministries.
