Irvine associates, their families and friends participated in the 12th Annual Reaching for the Cure Run/Walk race event at the Irvine Spectrum, Calif., on May 2.  The walk was organized to raise money for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. According to participants, it was a beautiful day and a great turnout.

“I liked the fact that many families were involved,” says volunteer, Pam Kravitz. “Everyone displayed great enthusiasm for the cause!”

More than 8,000 people were in attendance at the event, which raised more than $300,000 to fund children’s cancer research. Of the 8,000, an estimated 5,400 runners and walkers took part.

The Run/Walk event offered something for everyone, from serious runners, casual joggers and walkers to volunteers and spectators. Participants could choose from a half marathon, 10K or 5K run, 5K walk, or 1K Kids’ Fun Run, each offering beautiful scenery on a fast flat course that features Irvine’s beautiful paths, parks and neighborhoods. Top racers in all age groups competed for fabulous prizes.

What made this year’s run/walk so special was that instead of creating a team, the Irvine Foundation members joined Team Thomas, named for a boy who is suffering from cancer. Thomas was happy to have so many people joining his team, and the Irvine group enjoyed the fun and comradery.

Volunteers included Liz Brito, Pam Kravitz, Christopher Kravitz (Pam’s Son), Courtney Doeding (Pam’s Niece) and her roommate Ally, Janis McCombs, Jeanne Moretti (the late Rich Moretti’s wife), Ted Schmitz and Vicky Schmitz (Ted’s wife).
