Golden State Foods Foundation in Portland was recognized as a “Partners of Distinction” at the annual Hearts & Hands Auction on Friday, October 2. This award recognized Golden State Foods along with two other companies, McDonald’s Owner Operators of Oregon and Southwest Washington and Parr Lumber Company for their contributions and endless service to the Ronald McDonald House. Making this year’s award ceremony very unique was the 25th Anniversary celebration of the first house being built in Portland.
GSFF received the award for all of the hard work given to the house. Being honored for not only their many volunteer efforts, including cooking meals, conducting fundraising events such as golf tournaments and poker parties, sponsoring other service activities, and delivering supplies to Portland’s two houses and events, GSF helps whenever asked. Golden State Foods is also a major sponsor of all of RMHC’s annual fundraising events.
“It was a wonderful evening and very gratifying to accept the award for all Golden State Foods,” says Mark Halpern, Portland Foundation chair. “Our company has been fortunate enough to support the two houses in Portland, but also one in Bend, Ore., and another in Boise, Idaho. By GSF’s involvement we really do walk the talk. We have also been blessed to help out behind the scenes to assist the houses with our transportation and deliveries of paper goods. The Portland Committee does a great job supporting the houses through time, treasure and talent throughout the year. We are very grateful and proud of this award.”
RMHC had a professional video crew come to the center to tape and interview associates as well as video delivering goods to the house. Ashleigh Revelle, customer service, and Ann Blaine, customer service, Mike Ehlers, operations manager, and Mark Halpern, General Manager, shared some insight and feelings to what RMHC meant to them. Ashleigh, a four year survivor of cancer knows exactly what it is like for these families. Being in that situation before, her empathy really has shown with all her service and attitude.
“While our Hall of Fame has recognized the contributions made by individuals over the years, we felt that our 25th Anniversary was the perfect occasion to acknowledge the equally impressive contribution of our extraordinary corporate partners,” says Tom Soma, RMHC executive director. These three organizations have contributed countless hours in service to the children and families and contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
